MONEY TALKS MM HMM...
Sixth Formers from Wellington College recently raised £12,000 in a day by composing a CD and selling it for charity. The students took part in an innovative new learning experience: Musikscool.
Run by personal development trainers and musicians, Musikscool is aimed at school leavers who want to apply for work and university. It assists them with the interview process by providing an in-depth and professional insight into all the ways in which they communicate and adds an extra dimension to their CV. It's also brilliant fun and raises lots of cash for great causes.
The pupils at Wellington were inspired by a film of a girl suffering from a rare genetic skin blistering condition Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) and so opted to raise cash for the deserving charity DebRA which raises awareness and carries out research into (EB). They were then split into groups to compose music, write lyrics, produce the final chosen songs, create a marketing and sales strategy, design a CD cover and insert, fundraise, publicize and sell the CD and then finally count the cash! The students well exceeded their £10k target and were thrilled with their CD but also developed new working relationships with friends they'd know all their school career and also with the facilitators.
Musikscool is run by several professional business people who guide the participants through the process but do not offer direct answers. They have a variety of skills and backgrounds so they can provide each student with a broad but detailed individual report on their communication skills, areas to improve and how to develop further. Mike Ponting, MD of training company Making The Link, and a facilitator at Wellington college "was incredibly impressed with the energy and commitment of the pupils, and how quickly they put the charity aspect of the project as the priority rather than using the day solely as a CV enhancer. This honesty and integrity alone puts them in good stead for any future venture they choose to participate in".
