The Ultimate Challenge- a high performing team in action

THE ULTIMATE CHALLENGE.
They did it! The Making The Link team climbed over 4000m to the summit of Mount Kinablalu successfully finishing in first place and raising over £20,000 for The Anthony Nolan Trust.

The team comprised Regional Director of Furniture Village Warren Portlock, equine vet Peter Thurlow, Project manager Matt Wood and Sean Kelly. They spent six days in the jungle competing in an endurance adventure race in the heart of the Borneo jungle which included trekking, running, cycling, rafting, as well as jungle survival. The event's climax was a dawn hike to the summit of Mount Kinabalu some 4,100m above sea level and the highest mountain in Borneo.

According to Mike Ponting "The event was hugely challenging for everyone on several different levels. There were the obvious physical challenges but we also faced getting to know one another, confronting our own mental and emotional challenges and coming together as a team - all difficult challenges when you're newly acquainted with your team members and facing adverse conditions."

The rest of the team agreed that having a shared goal was invaluable to the success of the team. Mike says "The team drew on everyone's strengths, be it physical fitness, the ability to listen and empathise, humour or sheer determination. All these traits were important to our successful ascent of that mountain, just as they are in less diverse, everyday business situations. We were lucky to have such a wide range of personalities on our team. Ultimately they were able to bring each other through the tough parts. That's real team work, and it leads to high performance."

The team had a strong desire to win but the team also had a responsibility to our chosen charity to raise as much money as possible. The Anthony Nolan saves the lives of people with leukemia by matching them with stem cell donors. The Trust raises money to recruit new donors onto the register, carry out ground breaking research and run education programs. The more people on the register, the more matches can be found and the more lives can be saved.
