Climb Every Mountain

Mike Ponting faced the ultimate trainer's challenge on a recent charity event: leading a set of strangers on a six day race through the Borneo jungles. Mike, Director of training company Making The Link, was part of a Raleigh International expedition raising funds for the charity.


The race required teams to participate in running, rafting, biking and trekking through the Borneo jungle to finish on the summit of Mt. Kinabalu at 4,100m above sea level. Those taking part in Mike's team had never met before and had were a mixture professions and abilities. Mike, a natural leader and motivator used his professional skills to build the team. This ensured everyone worked together to not only succeed in finishing the race, raising lots of money but to enjoy the challenge too.

 
Mike said "I was inspired by the individuals taking part and their various skills and aptitudes so used my professional experience applied advanced emotional intelligence techniques to bring them together as a team. Positive relationships formed as a result of this, and we worked together using the best of our skills and playing to the strengths of individuals.

Ultimately, we really brought the best out of everyone and were working together at optimum level ". Ultimately, they finished second, to a team who'd been intensively training together for the challenge for three months. This was an incredible achievement for a bunch of people who'd never met prior to arriving in the middle of the jungle, thousands of miles from home comforts.

This result is testament to Mike's skills and experience as a trainer and to the power of emotional intelligence techniques in getting the best out of people.
